Does Silicon Valley Style Work in Your Place?

In many places, people have been trying to build their own “Silicon Valley”. But none of them were successful as long as I know. Look at the world from a different perspective, there should be better examples. It might be old but new style.
This slide shows my thoughts on how to launch and foster high-value start-ups outside the United States.

Values in the Japan Society

Japan’s first constitution is “Seventeen Article Constitution” issued in today’s Nara, Kansai area, in 7th century(before Samurai Era). Its Article 1 says:

“和をもって尊し(‘Wa’ wo motte toutoshi)”; means “First and foremost, ‘Wa(和)’ is to be valued.”

‘Wa’ is often translated in English as ‘Harmony’, but it also means ‘collaboration’, ‘keep peace’, ‘respect each other’, etc. It sounds beautiful and nice, but it is very vague concept, so you can interpret it as you like. Because of this, it often provides an excuse of corrupt or negligent act.

Re-Think: Product Planning

Many companies conduct product management without product planning.

They copy a product which is originally designed by other companies, and modify it.
They strive to survey technology/market trends and roadmaps from leading companies, giant research firms, and enhance the variety of functions and/or the numbers to make their spec table better. They love to swim in the ‘red ocean’.

Apple is one of the companies which is carrying out product planning as well as product management. It often enters the market very late, but re-creates the market itself.
Apple strives to understand what the user-experiences the customer looks for, values, and needs, and re-invents the product category to make customers’ lifestyle better.
Apple loves to make her heart sing with her product.

Imagine if we didn’t have ‘dot.com Bubble’. We might live in the different world where broadband was still expensive, no Facebook, no Wikipedia, no Amazon.com, no iPhone, no Skype, no Twitter, no NetFlix, no iPad, no LinkedIn, …
